How it works

Fine needles deliver radiofrequency energy at a controlled depth beneath the skin. The thermal effect stimulates collagen and contracts existing fibrous tissue, while the surface is comparatively spared. Because the energy is delivered below the epidermis, it is generally more forgiving in deeper skin tones than ablative laser — although it is not risk-free in any skin type.

It suits mild to moderate laxity, textural irregularity, enlarged pores, acne scarring and definition along the jawline and neck.

What it will and will not do

Morpheus8 tightens. It does not lift in the way surgery lifts. Where there is significant skin excess or descent, the honest answer is that a device will not achieve what you are hoping for, and you are better served by a surgical opinion than by a course of treatments that cannot deliver.

Improvement is gradual, developing over three to six months as collagen remodels. Most people need a short course rather than a single session.

The treatment

Topical anaesthetic is applied beforehand and the treatment is generally well tolerated. Expect redness and a grid-pattern appearance for a day or two, and mild swelling. Most people return to normal activity quickly, with makeup usually possible after around 24 hours.

Suitability

Assessment covers skin type, tendency to pigment, active skin disease, metal implants in the treatment area, and history of keloid scarring. Settings are chosen accordingly rather than applied uniformly.

Risks and limitations

No treatment is without risk, and you are entitled to the full picture before you decide rather than a summary afterwards. These are discussed with you individually at consultation, in the context of your own history.

• Redness, swelling and a temporary grid pattern on the skin
• Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, less common than with ablative laser but possible
• Bruising, particularly on the neck
• Infection, including cold sore reactivation
• Burns or scarring, uncommon and associated with excessive settings
• Fat loss with over-aggressive treatment in thin-skinned areas
• Incomplete or gradual improvement requiring further sessions
