How it works
Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, influencing cellular energy production and signalling. Unlike laser resurfacing, the intention is not to injure tissue but to modulate cell behaviour without thermal damage.
Where the evidence is reasonable
The better-supported applications are in skin: improvements in fine lines, texture and collagen, benefit in acne particularly with blue light in combination, reduction of inflammation, and support for wound healing. There is also reasonable evidence for musculoskeletal pain and for muscle recovery after exercise.
These are modest effects delivered gradually over a course, not dramatic changes.
Where it is overstated
Red light therapy is marketed for fat loss, hair regrowth, thyroid function, cognitive enhancement, sleep, hormone optimisation and general longevity. The evidence across these ranges from preliminary to essentially absent. Hair loss has some supporting data but far less than established medical treatments.
The bigger practical problem is dose. Outcomes depend on wavelength, power density, total energy delivered, treatment duration and distance from the device, and these vary enormously between devices and protocols. Many consumer devices deliver a fraction of the dose used in published studies, while some clinical protocols exceed the point at which more light stops helping. A device being on and red is not evidence that it is doing anything.
How it is approached here
Red light is discussed as an adjunct with a specific purpose — supporting skin quality alongside other treatment, or aiding recovery — rather than as a systemic intervention. It has an excellent safety profile, which is a genuine point in its favour, and a low cost of being wrong.
Risks and limitations
No treatment is without risk, and you are entitled to the full picture before you decide rather than a summary afterwards. These are discussed with you individually at consultation, in the context of your own history.

Where you would be seen
Longevity consultations, biomarker review and follow-up take place at CLNQ Manchester at Deansgate Square, and at CLNQ Knutsford in Cheshire. Phlebotomy is done on site at both.
